The work in bioscience labs is associated with an incredible amount of disposables and an extreme amount of plastic waste.
In fact, academic research labs produce an estimated 5.5 million tonnes of plastic waste every year!
LET'S DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT!
To drastically reduce the amount of plastic waste coming out of labs, we need not only scientists but also manufacturers, suppliers, procurement officers and policy makers to join the mission.
That's why we must create awareness about the environmental impact of laboratory work -- including the plastic waste production!
YOU CAN HELP CREATE AWARENESS BY JOINING THE #LABWASTEDAY MOVEMENT ON 15 SEPTEMBER!
This is what you have to do:
1️. On this day, collect all the plastic waste you produce in the lab
2️. Weigh your plastic waste
3️. Calculate how much plastic waste you would produce in a year if this amount would be representative of a normal day in the lab
4️. Take a picture of the day's plastic waste
5️ Post the picture on Instagram and/or Twitter and use the hashtag #LabWasteDay. Write a text about the plastic waste problem and mention how many kilograms of plastic waste you personally produce in a year from your lab work.
This way, thousands of lab users all over the world can come together to promote the green lab agenda!
