Water baths may not look like much

... but they are using a loooooot of energy.

In fact, one 10-12 L water bath at 37°C can use as much energy as 2 small fridges at 4°C!

That's why changing your water bath habits can translate into reduced carbon emissions and lower energy bills.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?

1. Turn the water bath off when you don't need it. Maybe you can make a common agreement in the lab that you won't leave it on continuously and give it a label saying "Ask before turning off".

2. Use a lid to reduce loss of heat from the water.

3. Use as little water as possible.

4. If you are taking items directly from the fridge or freezer, let them reach RT before putting them in the bath.
